Glimmers, small but mighty
Someone said to me in a workshop this week, “everything feels so chaotic right now.” I know. I said, WTF.
The endless scroll of difficult world events
The pressure to be good at everything, whilst this is playing out.
Again and again = overwhelm.
Glimmers do the opposite. They calm our nervous system. They remind your body it’s safe.
A friend mentioned this to me this week. She picked it up from Deb Dana’s work with Polyvagal Theory, and it stuck.
The term is fresh, but the idea? It’s timeless. Mindfulness. Gratitude. Finding light in the cracks.
Noticing the tiny moments that bring you back.
A sunbeam on your face.
A stranger’s unexpected kindness.
A song that feels like home.
They’re small. Easy to miss. But they shift everything.
I'll leave you some examples.
A few weeks back, I’d sat on the wrong train platform for a while, yep, I know! It left me feeling stressed, worried about being late. Then, out of nowhere, a dog rolled up, pressed his head into my lap. No words, just warmth. And in that moment, I breathed again. A glimmer.
And then there are the ones we create.
As I entered reception for my workshop this week, the receptionist noticed my tattoo and we complimented each others designs. Her face lit up. A second later, mine did too.
That’s the thing about glimmers, they spread.
There are glimmers in your day. Notice them. Create them, even.
